The Broncos are lucky that the Chargers called off the dogs in this game!  The Broncos only had possession of the football for 23:17 of this game and it’s almost impossible to win that way.  Jay Cutler had a bad game as he only completed 14 of 32 passes for 155 yards with 2 interceptions.  He also carried the football 3 times for 42 yards (14.0 ypc).  Selvin Young led the running backs in rushing yards with 39 on 10 carries (3.9 ypc).  Brandon Marshall had a solid game with 6 catches for 75 yards (12.5 avg).  The Broncos finished up with 92 yards rushing on 19 carries (4.8 ypc) and they also completed 14 of 32 passes for 133 yards.

D.J. Williams led the way for the Broncos Defense with 12 tackles.  The Chargers finished up with 147 yards on 38 carries (3.9 ypc) and they also completed 18 of 28 passes for 187 yards.

Houston Texans 31, Denver Broncos 13

The Broncos had their slim playoff hopes dashed in Houston on Thursday Night at the hands of the improving Houston Texans.  Jay Cutler had another solid game as he completed 27 of 39 passes for 254 yards with a TD pass.  Selvin Young (8 car, 34 yards) and Travis Henry (10 car, 27 yards) never got the running game going for the Broncos in this game.  Brandon Marshall (11 rec, 107 yards) and TE Tony Scheffler (7 rec, 100 yards, TD) both gave outstanding efforts in this game.  The Broncos finished up with 72 yards rushing on 20 carries (3.6 ypc) and they also completed 27 of 39 passes for 236 yards.

D.J. Williams led the Broncos with 9 tackles in this game.  The Texans finished up with 158 yards rushing on 31 carries (5.1 ypc) and they also completed 16 of 27 passes for 200 yards.

The Denver Broncos are proving that anyone can play running back for them

It was interesting to see the Broncos give big money to Travis Henry in the off-season as they have proven that anyone can play running back for them and succeed.  Henry has carried the football 153 times for 653 yards (4.3 ypc) with 4 TD runs so far this season.  But he has been outplayed by a couple of undrafted rookies this season who both have huge upsides.  Selvin Young has been outstanding when given the chance to tote the rock so far this season.  Young has carried the football 100 times for 569 yards (5.7 ypc) with 1 TD run so far this season.  Even third stringer Andre Hall has been solid this season.  He has carried the football 41 times for 206 yards (5.0 ypc) with 2 TD runs.  Coach Shanahan might come off cocky saying that any running back can excel in his system…..but he has proven that to be a fact over the years.

Denver Broncos vs. Houston Texans

Both of these teams have dim hopes of making the playoffs if they win there last three games of the season.  It also will pit the master (Mike Shanahan) against his student (Gary Kubiak) which will make for some good looks on the coaches faces during the game.

Look for the Broncos to attack the Texans with their running game at the start of the season.  Travis Henry (653 yards rushing) and Selvin Young (569 yards rushing) will likely split the carries against a Texans’ defense that is allowing 118.2 yards rushing per game and 4.5 yards per carry.  As soon as the Broncos establish the running game Jay Cutler will throw the ball deep off of play action.  The Broncos offensive line has been really good this season but they need to keep DE Mario Williams (9.5 sacks) away from Jay Cutler if they are going to have success throwing the football.  Brandon Marshall is having a career year (75 rec, 1,029 yards, 6 TDs) and the Texans are having problems in the secondary as they are allowing 217.2 yards passing per game.

The Texans will probably come out passing the ball to attempt to entice the Broncos to abandon the running game early.  The Broncos cornerbacks and safeties are overrated so Sage Rosenfels should attack them deep with Andre Johnson and short with Kevin Walter and Owen Daniels.  If the Texans build a lead they should be able to grind the game out on the ground with Darius Walker against a defense that is allowing 138.8 yards rushing per game and 4.5 yards per carry.

PREDICTION:  DENVER BRONCOS 24,  HOUSTON TEXANS 21
